Threading With Die - Thread Cutting

Tuesday, November 29, 2016

The setting dies I purchased did not fit to my handpress . These screw turned out to be British Standard Whitworth (BSW) thread. So I ordered a dice in BSW size to re-threading the setting dies. History of Joseph Whitworth behind the BSW is quite interesting, to me with no engineering background.

Using proper lubricant is necessary.

The 5/16W18 dice I bought. From now on, I don't have to worry about threadsize of setting dices for my handpress when I order.

The hardest part in this kind of project is holding threads with a bench vice. The vice did't grip the cylindrical shape. Eventually I had to sand off cylinder to make partially flat surface.

Now the setting dies fit and my handpress works all good.

If things don't work. You just have to make it work.

Stitching Punch With Drill Press Stand For Leathercraft

Saturday, November 5, 2016

This is a simple drill press stand mods to punch stitching holes in leather. I found a drill stand and a hand drill at a junkyard sales. I cut the head of the hand drill and put it to the stand.

I see similar projects and studied them on the web. The common issue of this method seems to be that drill bit would be pushed back when pressing. To not that happen, I cut a piece of alminum plate to lock the drill bit for not been pushed back.

These plates are placed like this.

This hand press method is useful when you work at night without banging a hammer.
